How we work
Refrigeration work is often split between a consultant who designs it, an installer who builds it and an auditor who checks what it costs to run. We do all three, so nothing is lost between them.
We design the system
Heat loads are calculated from the product, the building and the way the site operates. Equipment selections, pipework and controls are designed in-house with our own design software, not left to a supplier to size.
We prove the energy case
Every option gets a running cost as well as a purchase price. On existing plant we look at how the system actually runs before recommending changes, so upgrades are decided on payback.
We build it and keep it running
We install and commission what we design, then maintain it with programmed servicing and a 24/7 breakdown line.
The engineer is your contact
Total Heat Exchange is owner-operated. The person who designs your system is the person you speak to when it needs attention, and the person accountable for how it performs.
Natural refrigerants
Australia's HFC phase-down is moving plant owners toward refrigerants with little or no global warming impact. We design, install and service systems on all three natural refrigerant families. Each has its own hazards, and the design has to answer them.

Carbon dioxide
Transcritical CO₂ systems
Non-flammable, with a global warming potential of 1 — but it runs at high pressure and displaces oxygen in an enclosed space, so leak detection and automatic isolation are essential.

Ammonia refrigeration plant
Highly efficient with zero global warming potential, but toxic. Plant needs leak detection, ventilation and strict safety controls.

Very low global warming potential and good efficiency. It is flammable, so charge limits and control of ignition sources drive the design.

Safety starts at the design
Refrigeration plant holds refrigerant under pressure, and some refrigerants are toxic or flammable. Most of those hazards are best controlled before anyone is on site, so that is where our safety work starts.

- Leak detection, ventilation, automatic shutdown and isolation, and pressure relief are part of the design, sized for the refrigerant and the space it serves.
- Isolated before work starts
- Plant is isolated and made safe before anyone works on it, and pressures are checked rather than assumed.
- Refrigerant recovered, never vented
- Refrigerant removed from a system is recovered for reuse or destruction, as licensed refrigerant handling requires.
- Working to the site’s rules
- We follow each site’s inductions, permits and hygiene requirements, whether it is a food plant, a cold store or a retail floor.
